Women seemed to be left out of most church historical documents.  However, Rebecca Hopkins reminds us in her article, A Taste of Chapter 1: Patrons, Missionaries, Apostles, Widows, and Martyrs, of Lydia and other women in the book of Acts and the impact they made on furthering the Gospel.

The Bible also tells us that pastors and missionaries aren’t the only ones with special positions in the church. Widows, virgins and deaconesses were included in a special order. Widows, for instance, were ordained, and included in their responsibilities teaching, prophesying, praying, hospitality and caring for the sick and poor. You might even call their work “pastoral,” the authors stated.
