  1. SAFE DRINKING WATER FOR MISSIONARIES — In the 2003/05/09 issue of Brigada Today we may have given a wrong impression on the type of goods TealBrook supplies to missionaries. Although they do have some camping gear, maybe we put them on the spot a bit much. :-) The primary thing they do is water purification. TealBrook has systems for individuals on a short term trip to use, for a large work team or for the career family living in a jungle hut or a high-rise flat. For the past twelve years TealBrook has specialized in helping missionaries with safe drinking water in virtually every third world country. Visit their web page at http://www.tealbrook.com/ , call them from the US or Canada at 1-800- 222-6614 or 651-365-7714. Email them at <info@tealbrook.com> . We appreciate any business you can send their way, since they’ve helped underwrite the cost of a future “someday secretary” at Brigada Today! Maybe then… we won’t have to work with a staff of one! 2. SO WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THAT “NEW TOOL”? — So Georgia wrote this past week from TN, “Whatever happened to that new tool you mentioned last January (see January 17th issue… “NEW TOOL HIGHLIGHTS COUNTRIES AND PEOPLES OF THE WORLD”)? As a matter of fact, she’s right!!! It was to come out in March… so it’s long overdue. We’ll see what we can find out. Thanks for your patience!

  3. MORE HELP FOR OVERSPAMMED USERS — Thanks to several who wrote to give us more options for unsolicited email. We’re gathering that this problem affects just about all Brigada Today users… and, in fact, all users of the Internet. One user wrote from Germany to say that http://www.spamgourmet.com offers great spam prevention. “You can have as many email addresses as you like and decide how many replies will be forwarded to your main address. I use it every time I have to insert my email address on the internet, it works, and it’s all free!” What’s more, you can apparently set the number of emails you want to receive via a certain address — and then it goes dead. Pretty cool. Thanks for the tip!

Bill added, “My own recommendation for cleaning up email is Yahoo. I use Yahoo to fetch my email from my “real” email acccounts because it allows me to be machine-independent. All my email is stored at Yahoo, so I can begin my email work at work, do more at home, or in another city. This fetching ability is a paid-service, but the spam-catching feature is part of their free and fee service.

“Basically, any time you receive a bit of unwanted email (spam) you click the “This is spam” button, which sends it to Yahoo for their study and review. They don’t just block the sender, since spammers frequently change their addresses. They study and categorize the nature of the message, sender, subjects, and so on, and begin blocking them – using your input and that of all other Yahoo users.

“The result for me has been phenomenal – my spam has dropped to near- zero. And you can view all captured spam for possible reversal. I’ve never had to do that.” (Thanks Bill!)

Finally, Jon wrote about the problem of spyware. “SPYBOT http://www.spybot.com can remove over hundreds of different spy programs that accumulate over the months on your hard drive and especially in your “cookies” folder. It describes each invader, and gives you the option of choosing the ones you want to smash and the ones that you want to allow to remain.” (Thanks Jon!)

  4. HELP FOR *NEW* MISSIONARY PARENTS — ‘Adventuring into Parenthood’ is still available on a donation basis from WEC Publications, Bulstrode, Gerrards Cross, SL9 8SZ, ENGLAND; <info@uk.wec-int.org> . It is written as “a series of letters to an imaginary missionary couple who are expecting their first baby” (a rather specialized market). </info@uk.wec-int.org>

  5. SUPPORT-RAISING THROUGH BOOK-SELLING — Good Books & Company is a new source of quality Christian books sold through direct sales and the in-home party plan method. They now offer qualified non profit organizations the opportunity to raise up to 34.5% of product sales in cash for use in short-term missions and other projects. Stateside groups sell books consistent with their mission at reasonable prices to earn cash. Investigate their web site http://www.GoodBooksandCompany.com . Then contact <patodom@cox-internet.com> or 870-918-9922 for details and a catalog. Fundraisers may benefit group or individual activities. </patodom@cox-internet.com>

  6. TEE MATERIALS FOR ESL SPEAKERS –The Distance Education Department of Christian Leaders’ Training College in Papua New Guinea has developed materials over the past 30 years for Leadership Training and Discipleship in simple English. As part of the missions vision of the PNG church, they are hoping to be a blessing to others around the world by sharing these resources with those who may be able to benefit from such materials in English (or they could be translated into other languages). If you would like to find out more contact Emmanuel at <ekauna@cltc.ac.pg>. </ekauna@cltc.ac.pg>

  9. DISSERTATION ON CHRIST’S “SELF-EMPTYING” IS AVAILABLE — Dr. Daniel Harmelink is willing to share his Ph.D. missiology dissertation on the subject of Christian mission and the “self-emptying” of Christ in Philippians 2:7. He wrote, “The increasingly significant motif of “kenosis” was researched through a systematic investigation of mission literature and over 250 written surveys by mission administrators, professors and filed workers. The dissertation is the definitive work on the subject of how contemporary mission leaders understand and apply “kenosis”, with 57 charts, 54 “prescriptive theses”and an exhaustive bibliography of “kenois” in mission literature.” Please contact Rev. Dr. Daniel N. Harmelink <missio@earthlink.net> for more details, availability and pricing. </missio@earthlink.net>
