The USA government is rolling out facial recognition as the *only* entry requirement for Global Entry members at a select group of airports. Once these started popping up, we did some research and found that the US Government had announced the measure with very little fanfare some time. ago. For example, see https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/national-media-release/global-entry-celebrates-10-years-expediting-international-travel . Of course, some risk-averse travelers will decry the abuse of privacy, but others will appreciate the increased speed and ease of travel through customs and immigration. Is this a sign of what’s to come? (Thanks for bubbling this up to us, Caleb!)
This is not the only place facial recognition is being used. The airlines have been setting up for facial recognition for years. I was told they have been tracking individuals with this technology from arrival at the curb, through checking in, and navigating the airport terminals so they know when you should and do arrive at your gate. On my recent international flight boarding was done using facial recognition and it’s pretty much the only way one could get on board. Tickets will soon be obsolete because of this technology.
Many people don’t realize they are willingly giving up privacy by using things like Amazon Echo, Siri, and “Hey Google” which are making there way into homes, cars and day to day life. Not to mention smart homes. It reminds me of Big Brother in the book 1984. There are pro’s and con’s to this transparency, but personally I don’t like where technology is taking us. However, I’m not sure there is much we as individuals are going to be able to do about it.
My/our hope is not in technology, or government. Our hope is in the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth and the lover of our souls. This is no surprise to him and likely is leading the way for his return – when the whole world will see him coming with the clouds. Rev. 1:7
Amen, come Lord Jesus!
DNev, yes, on our last flight, facial recognition became our boarding pass too. But I had never heard about using facial recognition as our passport! This is all brand new in the last year. And, as for the return of Jesus, I just hope we have lived in such a way that he recognizes our face. :-)
I wonder if growing a beard or shaving off a mustache or beard might prevent recognition
