What if we were to ask you, “What’s the best accounting software for missions (Windows or Mac)? What would you answer? Would it be Quickbooks Desktop 2015 Pro? …or is someone now recommending Quickbooks online? And what about the new crop of ‘cloud’ accounting systems like Freshbooks and Xero? Have you found something you love? Please jot a note and tell us why. Just click “Comment” after the web version of this item. Thanks a bunch!
I recommend Banana Accounting 7 http://www.banana.ch/ if you need a multicurrency accounting package, but you don’t need something to do inventory in the accounting. This program is from Switzerland. It lets you switch program languages, so it’s easier to use with partners. It does take some learning, but it works well. It is resident on your computer, not in the cloud. Data files are not to large, meaning it’s easier to share with other people by email. QuickBooks files are huge. There are versions for Windows, Mac and Linux.
For what it’s worth, our bookkeeper, when we were talking about changing all of our computers to MAC said, “I will only work on QuickBooks, and that on a PC!” ;-(
I’ve used Power Church Plus with great success. They have good training and support, and the software is stable.

I just learned about a great budgeting program called You Need A Budget, YNAB. A missionary friend uses it and it’s particularly helpful for those of us who don’t have a consistent amount coming in each month. I’m going to try it out soon. It costs $60 one-time, but also online teaching on how to use it and budgeting principles. http://www.youneedabudget.com
We use and recommend Xero, and as a Certified Partner we offer discounts to nonprofits. Reach out to us, we have found it much better than QuickBooks, cloud-based, multi-currency, add receipts from smartphone images, and more. We also help people integrate Concur for travel & expense managment and reimbursement as Solutions Partners.
