Hoping for slicker integration for my tech stuff, and wanting to better sync w/ my Mac teammates, I went Mac a year or two ago.
The iPhone has been fabulous. I’m super impressed. However, I have *not* been nearly as impressed with the Mac computers as everyone else seems to be. Yeah, the hardware design is superior, but I’ve felt like Mac has made easy stuff just a little easier, but harder stuff all but impossible… and that’s maddening for a guy who tries to do lots of the harder stuff…
But just a week or two ago, I may have stumbled across a Mac power tool the likes of which I never saw in the Windows world: Automator, a piece of software that comes with Mac OsX.
From the YouTube videos and little bit of experimenting I’ve seen, I get the impression it’s a quick and easy way to create work flows and even executable program files that do exactly what I tell it to. Right now I’m collaborating with a friend in an effort to make a little program with it that will merge in information from a .txt file and a .csv file and then send out personalized emails to people who have adopted specific days of the month that they pray and fast with us throughout the year.
We’re also working on a slick way to send a personalized thank you note to those who have kindly partnered with us each month by giving financial support.
Seems like a cool tool to me. :-)
I unashamedly use the camera on my iPhone for EVERYTHING. For traveling, I’m often taking a photo of the subway route map posted on the underground wall for whatever city I’m in. Taking a photo of a restaurant I pass on foot which I want to return to in the next day or two before I leave. Taking a photo of a souvenir then emailing it to my son to see if he’s interested in it. Photos of the notes someone else took at the meeting we were at. Especially photos of the information projected on screen at training meetings, in case there are no handouts (and there often aren’t — we aren’t in Kansas anymore, Toto).
