1) ‘WORSHIP & ARTS IN MISSIONS’ WORKSHOP — Register now for WAM! II, a 3-week workshop designed to equip worship and arts leaders for ministry to the nations. 2) DEVELOPING 21ST CENTURY MEDIA TRAINING — The International Communication Training Institute and the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies have released details of a 3-day conference for anyone concerned with the training and development of media professionals working within the framework of their Christian faith. Sessions include: Developments in Francophone Africa; Distance Learning and Media; Leadership Development; Religious Authority and Cyber Islamic Responses to September 11; Media in Christian Witness – exploring the development of reflective practice and Christian apologetics in the media. I shouldn’t have been so flippant with the quote about Paul’s trip to Damascus (“the best thing since the light on the Road to Damascus” in the item on the Alpha Course, “1) ALPHA COURSE OFFERS PROMISING HELP FOR DISCIPLERS”, Jan. 4th Brigada Today). 10) THE BACKPAGE: DOING INTERNET BY SATPHONE — As I compose this edition of _Brigada Today_, I’m on a plane home from serving in a war-torn nation in Central Asia for nearly 2 weeks. In this particular nation, there are probably a total of 150 working phones for a population of *millions* of people. That’s one of the reasons why I took a satphone to connect with my office and family. The most effective deal I found for voice *and* data was through InTouch. Write the rep. at and tell him you heard about it from Doug Lucas and maybe he’ll knock off just a *few* dollars for you. If you’re headed to Europe, Africa, the Middle East or South/Central Asia (in other words, about all the 10/40 Windwow), ask to rent the Thuraya model. Trouble is, it’ll be pricey… something like $100/week or more. But in judging the alternative (no way to call for help if bandits are approaching from the North, South, East *and* West). With the Thuraya, I connected first time nearly every time, at 19.2K to the Internet. I took along an Iridium satphone and typically connected at *much* lower data speeds for it. Maybe 2 or 3 K — like nearly stone age! :-) But if your work is taking you somewhere other than the Thuraya coverage (see the coverage footprint at www.thuraya.com) maybe you’ll have to give more thought to the Iridium – which works anywhere on the world. Either way, per-minute rates are indeed steep…. somehthing like $2/minute, though we won’t know for sure ’til they’re bliled on my credit card. You can also buy the Thuraya in the Dubai airport duty-free, but the only packages they sell is the “Airport pacakge” with prepaid sim cards, a real hassle in that you have to always buy new cards. That’s why Dai Rees is such a good deal then… because he sells the subsriptions on a month-by-month basis. Try him… You just might like it! (By the way… I get no benefit of any kind by promoting him. In fact, I had to pay the normal full price like anyone else. I’m just “one beggar telling another where to get bread.”
