Thanks to Tim, who wrote this past week, “Working from does not simply mean ‘being productive,’ but it also means being protected from ransomware and viruses.” He added, “We need the technologies to function, but also a means for backing up.” Then he asked, “please list the tools, deals, and systems you’ve found most useful.” To see his list, click

Tim started a short list. Can you help him grow it? He listed:
Hamachi (vpn.net) is a simple VPN system for connecting computers together even when they are located far apart. Most recently we used this for an organization that did not have the capability to configure full-scale VPNs on their networking equipment but needed some staff to connect to their office computers from home over Remote Desktop. Hamachi works well on low bandwidth unless you are doing high-bandwidth operations across Hamachi. It should never be used on a domain controller.

Dropbox, Google Drive, and the like have reasonable free offerings that allow you to share some drive space with others, provide reasonable backup potential. There are varying arguments for and against these if you are in a country with extra security concerns, but in most places they work fine.

Skype and whatsapp still work for communicating between people. Zoom still has free accounts for group meetings that are 40 min or less in length. [See item 10 for a security discussion about Zoom.]
