This free film — River of Victory — explores the complex love-hate relationship between Sang Ly, a young Cambodian mother, and the Stung Meanchey landfill where she lives. While the dump provides her with a source of income, it’s killing her son. After numerous attempts to heal her child fail, Sang Ly leaves the dump in search of a Cambodian healer from her homeland. In a haunting encounter with the healer, Sang Ly places faith in her culture, hoping to keep her son alive. You can watch this culturally authentic film at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6GEiFwkL24 on YouTube and learn more about it at the related website, https://riverofvictory.com/. It doesn’t specifically address missions – but it might make a great launching pad for a great discussion about poverty. If you watch it and do a follow-up discussion, would you be so kind as to record your thoughts here in the comments?
A real heart-breaker! May God help us! Social justice. Prince of Peace! Merciful God of Love!
Neal. Really appreciate your books.
The movie: Very similar to a dump I visited outside of Mexico City. I was with Ron Post the founder of Northwest Medical teams and we were with their partners Manos De Ayuda. The ministry had built a sewing center for the women and a school for the children and provided one meal a day.
Something like that should happen here but who is called to do it. This situation not uncommon. No hope without Jesus and his people.
When we drove up onto the dump all we had to give was some candy. Some of our group wouldn’t get out of the bus. I thought it was shameful.
Dennis, thanks for the comment about our books. Our son, Greg, works with some people in Cambodia who “work the dump”. He is taking another team there in January,’25.Needs around the world! I can “throw the one starfish back in the sea.”!! This I try to do.
