If you know me (Doug), you probably can imagine that this is how I will likely die. https://youtu.be/68THmzSxJqI.

After you watch this ad, could you brainstorm with us regarding why it’s so good – and funny? How might we learn something for the sake of mobilization? What could/should we do differently in promoting mission opportunities and partnerships? Either way, please tell us what you think of the spot.
Doug, do you need money for a new pair of glasses?
“When you’re a soccer fan every spherical object looks like a soccer ball, and when you’re an (x movement) fan every need looks like an x”?
Thanks to BOTH Davids for hilarious responses to a hilarious spot. : ) And yes — I’m sure I’ll need new glasses now. : )
I broke my wrist leaping for a soccer header-ball; my wife likes to say that I had my eyes on things above, not on things below… Basically, I leapt up, and ran into someone else going for the same ball. It was the landing that had issues for me… Of course, he busted out his eye-socket hitting my boney shoulder…
Humor is always fun, particularly humor that clicks with an audience. It is a great way to start a conversation. The next step is bringing in the Bible, or whatever you are interested in saying. Humor builds bridges. One can simply leave a bridge hanging there, or one can use it as a roadway to get to a particular destination.
For this particular ad, it is great because soccer is the international game. Most countries will relate to soccer in one way or the other. A lot of people will recognize the bowling-ball, though not everyone. So it is not a perfect ad, just a really good one. :)
Tim, GREAT input! Thanks for commenting!
But — ouch – so sorry about your wrist! : )
Doug
The second David put it well. Sometimes we think we have the solution (physical, spiritual) a group needs. In reality, we haven’t taken time to truly see the issue. We might end up hurting ourselves and leaving the group no better, or perhaps worse, than they were in the first place.
I think this ad speaks to when thinking innovatively about mobilization, of yes, “getting one’s head in the game” but beware of leaning too much on one’s own head/understanding. (Proverbs 3:5,6)
The name of the glasses are ‘Synoptik’ which makes me think of ‘synergy’ and ‘optik’. Which makes me think that 2 (as in 2 eyes) are better than 1. With more than 1 eye(1 perspective) there is safety (‘in the multitude of counselors there is safety), there is more depth perception, etc… the wisdom of not going alone for multiple reasons as a frontier mobilize. Make sense? I’m inspired.
Jim, what a great lesson! : )
Synergy, safety, sight (and soccer!) in (futbol!) frontier mobilizer community. Hoorah!
Soccer is the global sport and is played with a round spherical ball, like the globe. There’s a simplicity to the game (put the ball in the net; as in this globe and everything in it belongs to King Jesus) as well as much complexity (missiological principles, the four major perspectives we learn of through Perspectives course; and soccer/Great Commission is fantastically complex regarding rcultures, languages, and peoples still to be redeemed! There’s also a tremendous beauty to “the beautiful game” as there also is, with the Great Commission and God’s beauty to be seen in and throug all 17,000+ people groups, redeemed for eternity!
