OK. I’ve tried to be a faithful Windows Mobile phone user. But can we Windows Mobile people do what iPhone customers can do at Google Voice? For the backgrounder on this, see, for example this story…
which, by the way was gathered by our Uganda Desk Associate, Lissa. (How does she come up with these? Does she have an iPhone?) By the sounds of this, people with an iPhone can now send int’l text messages for free. About the only thing we [Sprint] Windows Mobile people still hold over everybody else is the easy way in which our phones can serve as a wireless router for our laptops without having to pay any throughput charge for megabytes, all while operating at 3G or 4G speeds (using the special utility, PDANet from June Fabrics…

So, I’m left with that haunting feeling that maybe you’ve experienced too: “Do I have the right phone plan? Do I have the right phone?” :-)
What’s your advice? Just click “Comment” below and set us straight. Thanks. And thanks to our faithful Uganda desk. :-)
I’m a convert from Windows Mobile to the iphone. Regarding the wireless router thing – there’s an app for that. If you jailbreak your iphone (which is required if you’re taking a US based phone abroad and want to use a local carrier in the country you serve), there’s an app called MyWi.
I’m impressed w/ the iPhone 4. It’s a mega-leap forward from my Palm Treo and Palm Centro. There are some really cool apps (Pano for panoramic pictures, Dropbox, Docs to Go, image scanners, iPod…) and some tempting accessories, too (wireless keyboard). And did you know that it’s even able to copy and paste, now?! :)
Though the battery life is far from impressive and as a new user I’m amazed how unimpressive iTunes is, I’m far more impressed w/ it as an upgrade than I am w/ the change from Win7 to Mac OS X.
Ultimately what you want to do is jailbreak it… that opens up all kinds of amazing options, including also running Anroid OS stuff.
I upgraded from an AT&T Tilt to a Tilt2 about a year ago. At the time I thought it was a no-brainer because I’ve got a fairly significant investment in WinMo software.
However, soon after I upgraded I decided to move away from outlook to do everything in the cloud (best move I ever made, btw). In the course of my research I read again and again (from the guys that were writing the software I wanted to use) that “windows mobile is dead.”
I’m incredibly tempted by the iPhone 4 … except for the unbelievable price tag. So secondarily I’m tempted by the various androids — they seem made-to-order for cloud computing with their google conx already…
In any event, Windows Mobile has been my constant companion (“attached at the hip” – literally!) for over half a decade and now I can’t wait for disaster to strike so I have an excuse to move away from them… :-(
I have a love hate relationship. I love the iPhone and I hate AT&T. But the iPhone wins out. I have had Palm, Windows … tried them all. Got the iPhone and just quit looking for anything else.
The ease of finding apps in the store, too purchase them and then they automatically upgrade is great.
No more searching the web trying to find apps and then keeping up with the upgrades.
Very hard to get it away from the 3 grandkids who pretty well have it mastered.
No brainer… the iPhone is a great tool. There are thousands of great Apps for the iPhone. I bought my wife one about three months ago and she said that it has changed her life (being more organized that is). I had a Treo for 2 years and a Blackberry for 4 years. I also had a brief hate relationship with a Windows Mobile phone.
The move to the iPhone was incredible. Strongly recommend it! If you live somewhere you can’t buy it locally, but a used 3GS in the US ($250?) and jailbreak it to work overseas. If you can get the 4G… go for it, it is great.
I do not see any comments here from people who are using advanced G4 Android phones. Has any one used both Android and iphones? Some of the comments mention jailbreak – what does this mean?
