That’s what happened to my laptop last week: The dreaded “Fan Error.” Just because of the apparent weariness of one $5 fan part, the entire Thinkpad grinds to a screeching halt. Fortunately, I had been using a simple tool, described earlier here in Brigada, entitled, Syncback. See the freeware version at…

Or compare features with the “SE” version (which costs $30) at…

Fortunately, the program had my back covered. In contrast to certain other times in my life, when everything was at risk, SyncBack had been hard at work each night, preparing me for just such a possible disaster. My laptop is still in Atlanta in the repair facility tonight, but I’m working from all backed-up files, still delivering you this Brigada Today on time.
What if *your* fan collapsed tonight — or any other moving part in your laptop. Has something covered your back? If not, it’s only a matter of time. As we’ve said before, there are two kinds of computer users: Those who have already lost data at one time or another — and those who *will*. Please… stop leaving it to chance. Get a solution today… and back up your hard work.
In other news… It’s nearly Christmas. In honor of backups, we present tonight another retro throwback piece of Brigada, first featured in the Dec. 16th, 2001 edition, courtesy Brigada participant, “Mark.” (Thank you Mark, wherever you are tonight!) To see the artwork correctly, make sure you view using a fixed type, such as “Courier New.”

I am in the research stage, looking for a backup solution that does this:
(1) Keeps my data “in the cloud” (I have low security concerns)
(2) Allows sync capabilities between multiple computers (I want the same data on my computer and my wife’s)
(3) Minimal monthly cost for around 70 gb of data
I google “sync online backup” and find lots of different options. Most of them have 2gb free and then up to around $5-10/mo for up to “unlimited” storage.
Then I found that I can run various forms of opensource software on my computer that then link into cloud storage, such as amazon s3 and etc. However, I find much to my surprise that the cost of simple storage is significantly higher than the cost of the special-purpose sync-backup sites. (i.e., about $13-15/mo for ~80gb on Amazon S3)
What are others using if you have a similar setup?

Doug, why SyncBack rather than Mozy? What’s the dif?
Hi KK. Mozy just sounds… so …. *slow*! :-)
Kidding.
But seriously… I tried those online backup sites and for me, I just didn’t like them. I wanted *speed*… so I just keep a portable hard drive under my desk, as big as I can afford. I guess it all boils down to personal preference. Either pay $60/year to Mozy, or pay $100 and buy the hard drive and own it. Personal preference.
