Are you interested in Bible Translation or learning a more difficult language for your work as a missionary? Try the 9 weeks linguistics course offered by SIL at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND. For 2008 it runs from June 9 – Aug 8. The first year courses typically include: Phonetics, Second Language Acquisition, Syntax & Morphology, and Sociolinguistics. These courses are a good introduction to decide if you should continue more studies to become a Bible translator. They are also just what you need to learn one of those languages that’s not taught at a local language school (often unwritten). After taking these courses many people prefer to direct their own language learning instead of going to a language school or use what they’ve learned to supplement their language learning at a language school. It’s too late for this summer, but think about it for next summer.
