  1. AMAZING SPONSORS EDGE CLOSER TO FULLY PAID SECRETARY — I continue to be amazed at these outlandishly encouraging sponsors. Recently, R.G. wrote, ” I have been reading Brigada since 1997 or so and always find great stuff. Thanks for your ministry from another Wycliffe mobilizer!” Along with his message, he sent via PayPal…. $100! Yahooo! Thanks also to Wilcannia River of Life for their partnership gift of $50. See them in the next item!

  2. GET CHRISTIAN-BACKED LONG DISTANCE, PAY 4.9 CENTS/MIN — If you’re located in the USA, now you can get Christian-owned and -operated long distance for just 4.9 cents/minute, and a portion of every minute you’re talking to your Aunt Lorraine will be given to Brigada! Blessed Hope Long Distance has set up a page at: http://www.lowermyphonebill.com/brigada/ Specifically for Brigada participants! Give it a try… and it will cost you nothing to help Brigada obtain enough funding for a Secretary! Thanks for your help!

  4. PUBLIC SPEAKING TRAINING FOR MISSIONARIES — Now you can get “Sharing the Bread of Life”, by Wentworth Pike (ACTION International). It’s a practical guide of how to organize, outline, and communicate God’s Word clearly and effectively. This book is intended for those who are inexperienced in public speaking and is excellent to equip new missions recruits who may be called on to speak anytime, anywhere! Get it from Gabriel Resources, which, by the way, offers discounts to individuals, missionaries, mission organizations and churches. Email order@omlit.om.org or call 1-8MORE-BOOKS (1-866-732-6657) toll-free in the USA & Canada or 706-554-1594.

  5. PRAYER GROUP TRAINING PROGRAM — Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF) is offering training for prayer groups on Saturday, November 1, 2003 at Peninsula Covenant Church – 3560 Farm Hill Blvd., Redwood City, CA 94061. You can subscribe to the OMF Bay Area Mission Update (quarterly email newsletter) by sending an email to omf_bayarea-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

  6. LATEST ON THE WAR AGAINST SPAM — Yikes. These Linux people are churning out the options. Check out SpamAssassin . “T.C.” says it’s worth a look… and superior to SpamBouncer. And… did I tell you I’ve voluntarily stopped using the “bounce” feature in MailWasher? After receiving several emails criticizing its deceitful nature, I decided I’d better bow out of it. I still use MailWasher to filter and flag spam, then delete it at the press of a button, but I configured the program to *not* send back the bounce-a-grams to the spammers. For one thing, folks told me it was a white lie. But what’s more, others pointed out that the reply addresses were almost *always* contrived. So the only people suffering from my combative mortar “return fire” were the ISPs being targeted by spammers themselves — by listing them in their “From:” boxes.

  7. VOLUNTEER MUSIC MISSIONS OPPORTUNITY — Volunteer Christian musicians are needed to help lead a music leadership training camp for one week in Les Cayes, Haiti. The camp is used to train music leaders for churches, new church starts, and for evangelism and church planting. The focus of the camp is composition of Chronological Bible Story-songs using indigenous Haitian musical styles. For more information, please write to: dawn.goodwin@cbregion.com or may call directly to Haiti: (011-509-245-5988) This is sponsored by the International Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention. The dates of this opportunity are July 31-August 10, 2004.

  8. “PARADIGMS OF THE FUTURE” REMIXED — We’ve gotten some negative feedback on our listing of “Paradigms Of The Future” (Item #6 in the 9/19 edition), on the web at http://www.christianfutures.com Thanks to “Joseph”, in Japan, who did some major reading on the site and discovered sections which talk of “no hell and all creeds and beliefs can work together for the God of Gods.” Thanks for the feedback, Joseph… and you raise a good point. We do our best to try to watch out for off-the-wall stuff… but please always remember to check these things out for yourself. See the “DISCLAIMER” section in the “Closing Stuff” below. That having been said, we’ll try, whenever possible to catch this kind of thing and give you a heads up. Just always remember that some are going to get through the gate. In this case, we knew the contributor and his reputation… so we assumed it was all okay. Lesson learned.

  9. IN SEARCH OF MISSING BETHANY PROFILES — We’re still trying to find out what happened to all the Bethany Unreached People Profiles. Dan Scribner recently wrote to us about it. He’s the former research guy for AD2000 & Beyond… and current stats guy for JoshuaProject.net. His findings? “The base URL was changed from www.bethany.com to www.bethanynorth.com The rest of the URL seemed to the be same except in a few cases of the cluster peoples. Just two weeks ago this was true. I redid all the Joshua Project profiles to point to the new URLs. … However, when I tried today, www.bethanynorth.com was a deadend / 404. Not sure what the deal is. Will let you know if I find differently.” Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to find any further word on this dead-end trail. :-(

  10. MISSIONS GATHERINGS IN EUROPE? — IIbET (Iberoamerican Institute for Cross Cultural Studies, http://www.iibet.org) is interested in knowing of the Missions Gatherings and Events around Europe, particularly those who are focused on the Muslim world. Also, a list is being put together of all the Hispanic (Spanish speaking) churches in Europe. If you can help with either one of these areas, please write Dan Johnson djohnsonIV@myrealbox.com . (Dan, please let us know what you find and we’ll post it here in Brigada.)

  11. BRIGADA READERS FIND HOPE AT HEALING FOR THE NATIONS — For eleven years, Healing for the Nations Intensive Retreats have been a source of healing and hope for people from all over the world. Recently, some Brigada subscribers responded to the HFN ad placed in Brigada Today and made the journey to Atlanta to attend the one week retreat held monthly at a beautiful place called Red Top Mountain north of the city. As one of those missionaries put it, “My only regret is that I didn’t do the retreat about ten years ago”. If the wear and tear of ministry and/or life in general has taken it’s toll and you need a safe place to find hope again, check them out at http:www.healingforthenations.org You may also call them at the following: 1 800 483 2841 (in the US) or 770 919 0140.

Just wanted you to know that we aren’t into any full-out advertising mode here. Brigada is still Brigada.)

  14. HOW CAN YOU SPOT A “PRAYER SPAMMER?” — This is a great question. Fred, a Brigada participant, wrote recently to ask about this. He had received several messages that ended something like… “Send this prayer request to 10 people.. to show them you love them, if you are not ashamed of Jesus,” or something similar. I’m not sure how to respond to this kind of message. I already receive a hundred or more prayer/mission reports per month. You probably receive more than your share too. My suggestion: Give people the honest option, before just assuming that you should add to their mix. Even if a really spiritual guy prays a full hour a day, there’s still an eventual *limit* to how many things for which he or she can pray. So give ’em a break… and ask before you assume they’ll want to be on your list.

  15. LAST CHANCE TO BUY THE CD-ROM TOOL — Don’t forget… You only have a until the end of October to get the special introductory pricing on the “Countries and Peoples of the World” CD-ROM, a Brigada sponsor. The stated aims of the project are:
