- NEW FREE E-BOOK ON CELL GROUP STRATEGY — Here’s a new e-book by Dr. Mikel Neumann, based on years of experience as a missionary, international seminar leader, and research. His experience in this vital area of ministry, recently gained him funding from the Billy Graham Center to study and write a separate book on home groups around the world. The e-book “Reaching Your City with Cell (Home) Groups” can be downloaded for FREE at http://acquirewisdom.com/g.o/brigada
- NEW BOOK BY FORMER HINDU ON SHARING CHRIST WITH HINDUS — Sharing Your Faith With a Hindu explains historical and contemporary Hindu customs, ritual practices, and intellectual obstacles to Christianity, and offers practical tips and tools on how to win Hindus to the Lord. The author, Madasamy Thirumalai, was raised a Hindu and became a believer in Jesus more than 20 years ago. He is a professor of world religions and an academic dean at Bethany College of Missions. For more information and an excerpt visit http://www.bethanyhouse.com . Special discounts are available for ministries who give away copies! Bethany House ships internationally as well. To order: <cs@bethanyhouse.com>; tel. in the USA or via Net2phone 1-800-328-6109 or (952) 829-2079; USA FAX: 866-220-8376 or 952-829- 2503.
- TEACH ENGLISH IN JERUSALEM — Want to teach English in Jerusalem? You can! The dates are September 2 – 28, 2002. The cost is US $650.00 which includes tuition and textbooks. Accommodation excluding meals from 2nd to 28th September is just $150.00 per person. For further inquiries, special arrangements or considerations, write <TESOL@wmme.org>.
- GET TO THE CORE OF THE BIBLE… IN THE HOLY LAND — Now you can study the “School of Biblical Studies Core Course (SBSCC)” in Jerusalem/Israel. It’s 3 months of focused Bible study that reveals the power of the Word of God to penetrate the heart, September 22nd – December 14th, 2002, in Jerusalem. Cost is US$ 2,295. For more information, log on at: http://www.sbscc.net Or write <sbscc@windowministries.org>.
- DO-IT-YOURSELF LIST SERVING — Here’s a piece of software called Gammadyne Mailer that can be used to maintain email lists, e.g., send prayer updates with addresses from a newsletter list database. It does email merge, will update your existing database for email address errors, and even allows you to host discussion lists simply using your existing POP3 email box and connection to the web. Moderate technical skills are needed and, it’s apparently available only for those running Windows. Registration is US$130. For more information, see: http://www.gammadyne.com/mmail.htm or email: <gregw@gammadyne.com> Granted… those with large lists would be overwhelmed by the number of emails coming in . . . and I suppose if you travel some (with your email shut down during your travel), this would not be a good solution.
- HOW DO YOU MOBILIZE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS? — Do you have information on Mobilizing/Exposure programs for universities? A professor at a Christian International University in South Korea would like information/leads on missions mobilization and/or exposure programs that have worked at other universities and/or churches. Because the university would like to start an extracurricular program to help mobilize and expose their international students to missions and they’re looking for ideas! Thanks! Please send replies to <joyceat123@hotmail.com>. She’ll compile a report for us to redistribute here on Brigada.
- BUILDING DIGITAL LIBRARIES AT YOUR CHRISTIAN COLLEGE? — Maybe you’ve heard about the efforts to build connected digital libraries. Maybe you’re doing it to support digital learning from your Christian college or university! :-) Maybe you can read it via 2.5 G cell phones (and later 3G cell phones). If you’re tackling this challenge… and if you’re interested in brainstorming about how subscriptions could be underwritten by western churches, write Ed <editor@adris.org>. See his newsletter at http://www.adris.org . He’ll compile a brief report for a future Brigada Today.
- AFFORDABLE SECURE WEBMAIL — Global Resources for Computing, (GRC) just rolled out its new SSL (Secure) Webmail service, an anonymous Webmail service for organizations operating in areas where higher than standard level of security for email is required. This new service will offer SSL Based Webmail, POP3(secure) and IMAP (secure) services. Contact GRC at 909-795-3877 for more information or email <info@grcomputing.net> or log on at http://www.grcomputing.net/webmail.html
- RETREAT AND “R&R” RESOURCES — Jolene is compiling a list of R&R/retreat locations especially geared toward those in ministry (artists’ retreats, prayer retreats, personal-solitude-time alone with God locations, vacation spots). If you know of an available guest room, church’s missionary house or retreat location that caters to missionaries or Christian artists, let her know at <jowilson@iowatelecom.net> . She will compile the results for an auto responder as well as post them on the internet. Please include as much information as possible (name, type of location, length of stay, what they offer, cost, contact information and URL).
- TRAVELING? LOOK UP A CLC! — Are you traveling somewhere this summer on vacation? Look up a Christian Literature Center, pick up something you can hand out to the folks you meet along the way, then prayerfully use your vacation trip for more than a vacation! Wendy did it. Check out the website for one of the stores she visited in Italy… http://www.clcitaly.com/live/home.php (Thanks Wendy!)
- MUSIC MISSIONS RESEARCH — Phil is researching the use of music in missions since 1987
(http://gardner-webb.edu/intra/pperrin/musicinmissions.htm). If you (1) have personal experience that can be included, (2) would like to be included on his website list, (3) have need for musician volunteers to be posted on the website, (4) would like to volunteer for music mission projects, or (5) have resources to add to the resource page or any other corrections or additions, e-mail him at <pperrin@gardner-webb.edu> . He’ll send us a brief summary report later. - MORE EASYENGLISH PSALMS — Book four (Ps 90 to 106) is now available from Wycliffe Associates’ web site – http://www.easyenglish.info . Further information may be obtained from <martin@easyenglish.info >.
- IT”S GOOD TO “GO” – IT’S CRITICAL TO “GO PREPARED” — “GO Prepared” the “Essential” series is, according to the author, the only Short-Term videotape Training Series of it’s kind in the world today. These tapes are designed to complement the ministry of your local church or mission agency, and are a great training tool for the rookie as well as seasoned Short-Term missionaries. There are three tapes with two training sessions on each. Over three hours of valuable training by Internationally recognized Missions Leaders. Each session can be presented alone or be incorporated into your present training program. For more information contact Jim at <tcci@tcci.org> or log on at http://www.tcci.org .
- ANOTHER POSSIBLE SOLUTION FOR SPAM — Here’s another possible solution for getting rid of spam: http://www.w2knews.com/rd/rd.cfm?id=020715TP-iHateSpam At least one Brigada participant says it works for him! (Thanks Phil!)
- POP-UP KILLER KILLED, FOR NOW — Those who tried to obtain the pop- up killer highlighted in our July 5th edition (“TIRED OF POP-UP ADS?”) met with a sad message that the pop-up killer software had, itself, been killed! The author has currently given up on publishing his product. But he’s also suggesting that someone else might take over the development. If you’re interested, don’t give up too soon. Check back at: http://software.xfx.net/utilities/popupkiller/ to find out what happens in this defy-death thriller! :-) ‘Course, James wants to let people know Netscape’s new Mozilla (and Netscape) browser can do this without requiring third-party software. Just go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Scripts & Plugins and change to your heart’s content. He usually disallowed webpages from “opening of unrequested windows”, “open link in a new window”, “move or resize existing windows” and “raise or lower windows”. Also, you can restrict animation to just once by changing Edit > Preferences > Privacy & Security > Images. Sounds like a great feature! (Thanks James!)
- LOOKING FOR A MISSIONS PASTOR? — ACMC maintains a list of individuals seeking a missions pastor position and a list of U.S. churches seeking a missions pastor. To put your name or your church name on the list or to request a list send an email with appropriate contact information to <davidmays@acmc.org> .
