A FREE PLACE TO STAY, AND AN EXCELLENT FUND-RAISING SYSTEM

mobilehome Christian Host Home International is a Christian-owned membership organization designed to provide a network of Christians who desire to both practice and utilize Christian hospitality. You may never have to pay for lodging again. Once a member, a person is able to request free lodging at another member’s home, anywhere in the world. The first- year’s membership is $50, with a $30 annual renewal charge. The system is also a fundraiser. Members who refer others to join receive $10 for each referral, or their charity of choice will receive $20 for each referral. For details, click to http://www.christianhosthome.com. Thanks for the tip, Art pulis@rmi.net!

BRIGADA – A GREAT WAY TO LEARN JAPANESE

Brigada Logo :-) Okay… so maybe not. Several Brigada participants asked why in the world they had to load Japanese language support to read last week’s Brigada Today. The honest answer is . . . no one knows for sure. EGroups has taken responsibility, for the most part, and they’ve assured us it was a one- time glitch. So maybe this week you’ll be able to load Hungarian? :-) Either way, sorry for the inconvenience . . . but honest . . . it wasn’t my idea! :-)

FROM THE “JANET RENO DIDN’T SAY IT” DEPT.

OPC logo In case anyone forwards you the email accusing Janet Reno of referring to Christians as “cultists”, just send them to http://urbanlegends.about.com/science/urbanlegends/library Tack on these letters to the end of the URL above: /blreno.htm?once=true& and you’ll find the page that squelches that rumor. It’s just a rumor.

ANOTHER STEP TO SAFEGUARD YOUR PC FROM TROJANS

virus Want to safeguard your PC all the more from Trojan “worms” (such as the “I love you” ‘virus’)? See http://www.pc-help.org/security/scrap.htm for the full discussion. The long and the short of it is that you need to make a couple of extensions visible that, by default, aren’t! You have to remove the NeverShowExt values from these keys:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShellScrap
HKEY_LOCAL_ACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\DocShortcut

As an additional step, if you have a virus scanner (you do have a virus scanner don’t you?), add the .SHS and .SHB extensions to its list of program files. This way your scanner is more likely to spot them as they surface. McAfee and several others have a means to do this. If you’re really paranoid, you can disable scrap objects by one or both of these means: Alter or remove both file types in the File Types dialog. (Open an Explorer window, and select View… Options… and the File Types tab. Look for Shell Scrap Object and Shortcut to Document.) To disable scrap files very thoroughly (this is the way I did it), remove or rename the shscrap.dll file in your System folder. Search your hard drive(s) and see if you have any scrap object files hanging about. Who knows what might turn up? (Thanks to the folks at PC-Magazine for this tip!) If you’re really paranoid, you can always get BlackICE Defender ( http://www.netice.com ) or ZoneAlarm ( http://www.zonelabs.com ) to help you watch your Internet back. :-)

MOTIVATING LANGUAGE STUDENTS

The French dept of a satellite education center is seeking to motivate American high-school students in language study. What better emphasis than that of communicating for Christ in missions? Please email Joy jemc1129@hotmail.com with any info relevant to francophone/other missions (cross-cultural life, language-learning stories, photos, tips for preparing now). Perhaps missionary kids could respond on topics such as multi-cultural households, local schooling, unusual/funny experiences, favorite pastimes.

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list. Recently, tons of well-meaning people have been subscribing Doug to their lists. Since he often travels overseas, he doesn’t join many of those, for obvious reasons (like being charged big-time for overseas access). So as a general rule, please don’t bulk-mail us! See the note above if you’d like to submit items for Brigada Today. Thanks for understanding. Bottom line: We will never create Brigada Today items from bulk mail. Bulk mail gets deleted immediately — sorry. Nothing personal. We suggest you apply the same standard to everyone. Ask first!

OPCWARNING ABOUT FORWARDING EMAILS — Please, before forwarding any kind of request (even if it says “please send this to all your friends”), please check to make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.
