REENTRY BIBLE STUDY READY FOR REENTRY USE!
Have you heard about “Fishers of Men”??? I hadn’t — until Donna walked in this past week to show it to me. She’s the Vice-Pres. of Missionary Care at our mission org. and she was struck by how easy it would be to plug this book into our program. I can’t figure out why we’ve never run across this one before. It’s available from Howard Lisech, 2100 Red Gate Rd., Orlando, FL 32818; tel 407-293-8666; email: HLisech@aol.com. Designed for use over a 14-day period, it gently cushions the blow of a hard return home after missionary service — reentry and debriefing sort of thing. Lots of Bible study, lots of fill-in-the-blank and journaling. Great stuff — and affordable. $4.50 for the spiral bound book… and they apparently have two versions, one for “Overseas returnees” and one for “stateside returnees.” Write Howard for more info.

“EXPOSITORS ARE US”
For those who have to teach or preach and take commentaries along, Jeff recently passed along the tip that Zondervan’s Expositor’s Commentary (all 12 volumes) has now been published on CD-ROM and though the normal price is $199.95, they’ve placed it at an introductory price of $79.95 for a limited time only. See http://www.zondervan.com/ebccd.htm for more details. Thanks Jeff!

COOL [COOL] CLEAR [CLEAR] WATER [WAAHHHH-TER]
Sons of the Sons of the Pioneers, be glad! You can have cool, clear water again! One Brigada participant just gave us a heads up on a new product that purifies water in a 5 step system that cleans at 1/2 gallon per minute. It connects to a kitchen faucet and with plumbing adaptation to other water supplies. The company plans to soon release one for missionaries to carry in a backpack that works on solar energy. It is reportedly not just a filter. Email Barbara Moon betterair@juno.com for more information. If someone is willing to try this out, we’d love to get some “user feedback” on it.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
As a result of the recent GCOWE ’97 meeting, African Christians are discovering a new passion to reach every African tribe and language group. Each AD2000 national coordinator has received a copy of the participants’ intended action steps for his or her region, and each country’s leaders have reviewed their country’s status of evangelization and their contribution more broadly to world evangelization. From all accounts these action steps are being vigorously pursued. Five or six regional meetings are being prepared to continue this unprecedented spirit of cooperation and the momentum for reaching the unreached.

UPGRADING SHOULDN’T BE SO HARD TO DO
I sure paid through the nose for my curiosity this past week. Qualcomm released a new beta of their developing product, Eudora Pro 4.0 (beta 3), and I went after it. Upon installing it, I was no longer able to open the program! I literally had to delete my Eudora application files and start reinstalling from original install diskettes (version 2.1.2). And get this — even after deleting all the application files, version 3.0 still wouldn’t install and open. I wrote the company and guess what they said: “Yes — that’s a known bug. Those with large address books can’t open the program upon install.” Yikes , Qualcomm. So who’s likely to try out a beta of a pro email client besides those who have tons of email friends to write! Duh! So why can’t software writers list those “discoveries” in a readme.txt file shipped with the program!???!!!

Then I got to thinking — how often do we allow people to believe everything will be peachy-creamy if they’ll just take such-and-such a training program or read such-and-such a book. Truth in advertising should probably extend to missions opportunities too. But we’re so persuaded that recruitment should drive our projects that I wonder if we’re sometimes reluctant to be 100% honest about how tough it really will be.

So last month, when our organization interviewed two new families for a new project we’re working with a local church to launch, we hosted a meeting with the local church missions committees and both new couples. I told them several times how difficult it would be… and I finally even [literally] got up on top the table and said… “Did I tell you this will be challenging?” (Do you think they got the point? :-)) I figured we’d never see them again. But do you think it scared them off? Not! One set of applications arrived this past week!

So — bottom line — let’s be honest, folks. Stephen Neill said (as quoted by Herbert Kane) that “Missions is so hard that it’s a miracle that it should ever even have been attempted!” Here here. This will not be an easy task.

Now… where’s that Madison Ave. recruitment brochure. :-) [As this Brigada Today “goes to press”, Version 4.0 (beta 4) has just arrived; what a sluggard. Where are my 3.0 install disks! :-) ]
