WEBWATCH
Still trying to track down that web page giving the USA’s policy on support of religious freedom? :-) Sorry the page we provided in last week’s WEBWATCH didn’t deliver. Try this one instead: http://www.state.gov/www/global/human_rights/970722_shattuck_christians.html. (Sorry for any inconvenience!) Thanks for the rescue, Marc. Also, one tipster suggested we direct people to http://www.musictus.com/gratis/ , which is apparently a grab-bag of free stuff. Finally, one reader suggested we look at http://www.kerk.net/cmi/ , a good example of a Netherlands-based mission organization trying to minister to the needs of prisoners in the former Soviet Union.

PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW III COMMITTEE REPORT
Just received a new update from the Christian Information Network (July 1997 report):
UNREACHED PEOPLE GROUPS: Luis Bush, International Director of AD2000 & Beyond reports that of the 1,739 unreached people groups identified 1995, ONLY 579 groups remain without an established indigenous church. Many groups were adopted at GCOWE and the new number will be announced in the near future.
PEOPLE PROFILES: Bethany World Prayer Center averages a translation of 30-35 unreached people groups weekly. Efforts are being made to have the group’s information translated into Spanish as well, for all Latin countries.
RADIO: PTTWIII committee members are pursuing radio as a medium to make more people aware of the “unreached people groups” of the 10/40 Window, and that these groups are being assigned for prayer and adoption through Christian Information Network. They are also approaching Christian recording artists to get behind the project for a “big push” as Fall 1997 approaches. Global Harvest did a large distribution to Spanish radio stations of the Praying Through The Window III book translated into Spanish.
CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT: Praying Through The Window III materials were made available to the GCOWE leadership in S. Africa to draw students worldwide into the 10/40 Window project, as they are being prepared for the next millennium. Approximately 300 students and deans heard the report. Christian Information Network mailed a letter to students of 400 English speaking seminaries and Bible Colleges in other countries. HAUNTED BY THE MEANING OF CAVEAT EMPTOR?
Remember that item a couple of weeks ago, “NO FREE LUNCH IN CHICAGO”??? We parenthetically asked “what in the world does ‘caveat emptor’ mean anyway!?” Well Chris Istrati wrote, “‘Caveat emptor'” means ‘Buyer beware’ as in ‘Cave canem’ – ‘beware the dog’ – a sign that was found in the ruins of Pompeii. ‘Emptor’ probably has the same root as ’emporium’ – or maybe ’empty’ because the shops cleaned you out. :-) ” Thanks Chris! Revis Ann Massey, our Customer Relations Manager, quipped, “How does he remember these things!” Turns out he studied Latin under the same Latin teacher that taught John F. Kennedy! I can just hear her/him now… “Ask not what Latin can do for you but what you can do for Latin!” No wonder he became president (JFK, not Chris!) :-) So now you’re all going to rush out to Rover’s house and put up a “Cave Canem” sign, right? :-)

DON’T FORGET YOU CAN STILL GET THE LIBRARY-TO-GO!
You can still “get” the collection of great CD reference “books” for cross-cultural church planters and those who love them — just send email to hub@xc.org with only the words,
get brigada library-to-go
in the text of the message (minus the quotes). There are dozens of options. If you want to add a resource to the file, or suggest a change, write DLucas@TeamExpansion.org with the words,
LIBRARY TO GO
in you subject line, please. We regret that we can only process changes sent in this fashion.

FREE FOR LIFE EMAIL ADDRESS (VIA A FORWARDING SERVICE)
It’s not that often you can get something for nothing, . . . but thanks to a Brigada tipster (thanks Faithe!), we learned this past week about http://www.yahoo.iname.com/, where you can get a free-for-life email address like . So from now on, regardless of which internet service provider you use, you’ll be able to redirect your email to the new address. This service would also be great for missionaries who switch to a local service provider while in the field, then change back to something like AOL or CSI during home service. Just publish your new “iname.com” address and you’ll never have to send out one of those “I’m-writing-to-inform-you-of-my-change-of-address” notes again! I went and tried it just for fun and, sure enough, it works great! You can now write me at DougLucas@iname.com. :-) (By the way, you can get this same service from MAFxc for $52/year, but with it, you’ll also gain some other nifty features, like email conferences and file archival.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM GUATEMALA
Remember Lori and Eugene Nij, missionaries in San Raymundo, Guatemala? Eugene “Queno” was released from prison Tuesday, July 29th. Although he’d lost count of the converts in the prison (he’d run out of chalk to mark with) it turns out that the Prosecuting Attorney had sent men inside the prison to catch Queno doing anything wrong. Instead, they too were transformed by this man “who thought of himself last on every occasion.” However, these men kept record of the 260 conversions. Today is a day of joy for Queno’s family, those nearby, and all those around the world who petitioned and prayed on behalf of this family.
(Source: The Quino web page: http://www.zianet.com/dean/page2.html )
Here’s the original Global Glimpse describing the initial situation: “Lori and Eugene Nij have served as missionaries in San Raymundo, Guatemala for over a decade. Over that time with the help of the New Iberian Mission Association they have built an orphanage, a Free School and a number of churches despite governmental opposition. In spite of over 300 witnesses, including police officers, Eugene was arrested and put in with general prison population. Undaunted, Eugene has been preaching and evangelizing at every opportunity. Tonight this small Mayan preacher, in love with his people, is lying on a concrete floor, giving praise to his God that he was chosen for this ministry, praying that he can reach “one more” before his time is up.”
(Global Glimpse is compiled each week by John Hanna, Caleb Project, Littleton, CO.)

ALMA READY TO PREPARE FOR REACHING OTHERS’ SOULS
In Paraguay, “The Heart of South America”, the Lord is raising up a new ministry, called ALMA, to help fulfill the desire of His heart, the saving of souls around the World. [“Alma” means “soul” in Spanish.] ALMA’s strategy is to work in partnership with Latin American evangelical churches in order to prepare Latin Americans to serve effectively as cross cultural missionaries. According to Dan and Arlene Cool, who work with the ministry, “A beautiful campus is nearly completed and ALMA is now looking for staff to begin the program.” Specifically they are seeking: an Academic Dean, a Bible/Missions Instructor, a Language Instructor, a Computer/Resources Instructor, a Work Program Director, a Dietitian, as well as adjunct faculty. For more information about ALMA and or these positions please e-mail: richgwin@datanet.com.py.

LATEST URBAN LEGEND: “JOIN THE CREW”
There’s yet another myth making the rounds . . . “Join the Crew.” There’s no such virus… so if you get a warning message about a virus by that name, just ignore it!

SINGLE SURVEY
If you are a single woman missionary (currently serving on the field or trying to raise support to go) or are with a church that currently supports single women in missions, someone wants to know (and it’s not just a bunch of single guy missionaries! :-)). Revis Ann Massey writes, “We are researching areas of support for single women involved in missions and need you to fill out a short survey.” Please contact Revis Ann Massey at: RevisAnnMassey@xc.org as soon as possible. We need to complete the research by September ’97. Thanks!
