Check with the U.S. consulate or embassy in our country and see what movers they usually use. Check the local newspaper in your country to see who is advertising or online movers–they are often hungry for business and are willing to negotiate, especially if you are getting quotes from several companies.
Check on whatever shipping company is used by US embassy and consulate personnel. It may be somewhat more expensive up front, but cost less in the long run. That’s what we wound up doing and it was very successful (and not much more expensive than others) except that US customs charged us $200 for a container x-ray that wasn’t part of the deal.
If you have any local friends who are in the import/export business, they might facilitate the shipment of a container for you. We were able to do this, packing it ourselves. Our friend got us a 20′ container at a commercial rate, insured and delivered to our door for around $1,800 (2003).
We used Fidelity Forwarding when we moved our office from Austria to the US. They were very professional, helpful, and gracious. And, their prices were the best we found for shipping a container of goods from Austria. A few other missionaries had also used Fidelity Forwarding and were pleased with the results.
