In one of the discovery Bible studies (3/3 groups) we facilitated this past week, we asked the question, “What do you like about this passage?” The passage was Mark 5:1-20 about the man who had impure spirits in the region of the Gerasenes. Suddenly, Marvin (pseudonym to show respect) looked up and responded, “I have been that man.” Marvin had used drugs and lived as a homeless man on the streets for nearly 20 years. Just in the past few weeks, however, he has really developed a regular rhythm of studying the Bible with us. I’ll never forget those words, “I have been that man.” Do you have a story like that?
There’s something about seeing a changed life like Marvin’s at Christmas time. It just comes full circle and puts the whole Gospel story together. A lost man sins. God cares and sends a baby to save him. The lost man finds hope, help, and heaven. And then he starts sharing with others, “I have been that man.” That, my friends, is the real meaning of Christmas.
