ENVISION ’96 RESULTS STILL BEING COUNTED
They came! For over two years, in the back of our heads, we’ve wondered, “What if we throw a party and no one comes!” Well, we did . . . and they came! … by the thousands! Accurate counts were difficult in Rupp Arena . . . and often there would be 1000 or more people still circulating in the Exhibit Hall among the record number of top quality exhibits (over 350). Well over 300 volunteers helped with youth sessions, which were said to be top notch as well. And in Rupp Arena, home court to the NCAA champion University of Kentucky Wildcats, thousands of people sang, worshipped, and fasted together. High attendance was probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 4000 in the arena alone, not including those in the Exhibit hall and youth sessions. Attendance at Friday’s “Pit-Stop-3” session for church leaders who are “adopting” least reached people groups was well over 100, and keep in mind that they had to pay extra to attend that session to get the big fat 3-ring notebook and hear the special speaker flown in from Ukraine. I got to run the first mile in the !televised! Torch Run, which originated from Cane Ridge Meeting Place (home of the Cane Ridge Revivals of 1801). When the Torch Runners came into Rupp Arena during the evening main session, the crowd went wild, just like in an Olympic opening ceremony. A beautiful custom-prepared video profiled landmark mission works down through the years, tying in the torch run at a perfectly timed finish with fireworks, strobes, and sound effects. Balloons and confetti dropped from the ceiling, and, to say the least, the people celebrated! It’ll be an image that we’ll all always remember. Throughout the weekend, some 20 “PACE” Projects were featured, in which churches have “adopted” people groups to help “set the pace” for Envision ’96. They included projects headed to places like the Berber of northern Morocco, Cambodia, Laos, Albania, and the Crimean Tatar
But just as impressive was the sea of people group posters in the seating behind the stage…. all 1739 of them! On opening night, the crowd got to see them all together, surrounding the mass choir and orchestra. But after that, the only way to get them back up in the seats was to “adopt” one of them for prayer. And adopt them they did. Final result are still being tabulated, but we know that well over 1000 were adopted for at least prayer, and many for more than that! (Final report just as soon as it’s available.)
Live international phone links were presented with a worker in mainland China and, later, with Beverly Pegues (Director of the Christian Information Network, which is coordinating “Praying Through the Window III”) at “Mission 2000” in Berlin. And well over 60 new workers committed themselves to cross-cultural mission work. Hundreds and hundreds of volunteers helped with everything from youth to hospitality to crowd direction to technical assistance.
It was truly an unforgettable experience . . . but if you’d like to see a taste, there is a way. ITEC, a video ministry based in the Great Pacific Northwest, would, I’m sure, be happy to send you a copy of a session…. Probably for $19.99??? If you’re interested, call 360-794-2099, fax 360-638-1625, or write Box 1681, Bellevue, WA 98009. Ask for session “961101V1”, Friday, Nov. 1, Envision ’96… or any of the other Envision ’96 sessions they taped.
Now for catching up from the email I didn’t answer during the past week! Thanks for your patience! :-) And thanks for all the prayers!!!

UPDATE ON THE WINTERS
For those who have been praying for Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Winter, Rick Wood tells us that “The doctors have prescribed 20 daily radiation treatments to destroy the tumor that is pressing on her spine and causing her the intense pain. They have not done a biopsy, but they believe that the tumor is cancerous and is related to the Multiple Myeloma diagnosis. They believe that she should have some relief from the pain after a few days of the radiation. They decided against surgery since she had just had surgery for the gall bladder and they would have to do radiation anyway to kill any of the tumor that would remain.” Rick asked, “Please keep her in your prayers. She does seem to feel better at those times when more people are praying. Please also pray for strength for Dr. Winter. This has been a physical and emotional strain on him as well. They are both walking in faith, trusting the Lord for His guidance and provision.” Dr. and Mrs. Winter, you have our prayers!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM INDONESIA
Muslim leaders in Indonesia have publicly expressed their regret for the violence that claimed five lives when 25 church buildings in seven cities were attacked in October. Abdurrahman Wahid, chairman of the country’s largest Muslim organization, said he would lead out in cleaning up and rebuilding the devastated churches. Muslim groups in Indonesia are one of the Church’s greatest challenges remaining to finishing the Great Commission.
