An international kingdom worker is looking for an inexpensive, reliable VoIP phone solution (not a call-forwarding service) to maintain a Canadian phone number while living overseas. With so many options out there, shopping for a good solution is extremely complicated. Can anyone recommend something they’re happy with?

Yes, I can recommend getting a Skype telephone number. I did that 2 years ago and have found it very helpful. I am from the U.S., but live in The Netherlands and travel extensively around the world. The Skype telephone number allows people from the U.S. to call me for free, and I receive the call if I’m on the internet. If not, they just leave a message which I can listen to and call back once I’m back online. Check it out: https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA256/how-do-i-get-a-skype-number
I can call my mother in the U.S. easily and the cost is minimal.
Blessings, Terry
I have used MagicJack for over a decade now. It offers free calls to the US and Canada and you can pay an extra $10/year for a Canadian number. I started with a landline that could plug in to my computer or router but now they have an app that is easy. It’s cheap, basic, and has worked really well for me. You can text but for some reason the texting feature didn’t work well for me while I was overseas. It works fine while I am in North America. When I’m in the US, I use MayaMobile data plans which start at $5/month so I can have access to my MagicJack number anywhere. (They have prepaid data plans for many countries. The setup is strange but customer service is quick to respond if you have trouble.)
