We have the opposite experience. We’re the missionary grandparents who leave their children and grandchildren behind to go overseas. This is also very difficult, particularly for my wife, the grandmother. She feels it much more deeply than I do. There are seemingly similar dynamics at work yet the emotional and psychological dimensions are more complex. The physical return to the home country is challenging as we try to reinsert ourselves into our grandchildren’s lives for a short period of time before taking off again.
