Wycliffe Associates (UK) produce functional literacy books which are intended to raise interest in community projects or as simple aids for adults who are learning to read for the first time in their own language. The subject matter (the ‘Functional’ bit) is designed to show new knowledge or skills. The books cover agriculture, crafts, farming (animals), health & hygiene and illnesses & diseases. Shell Books are available as computer files (Word and Publisher) which can be printed off as small A5 booklets. Many of the English titles have been translated into French, Portuguese and Spanish, however, the original text can be lifted out in order to insert a local language whilst retaining pictures and computer formatting.
