GLOBAL MAPPING MAKES SPECIAL OFFER TO BRIGADA READERS

Thanks to Harold Britton and the folks at Global Mapping! Having seen Brigada‘s readers’ commitment to praying for the 100 Gateway Cities (by way of receiving hundreds of 100 Gateway Cities map orders recently), they have recognized the 1300+ readers of Brigada as a unique family of serious co-workers deserving special consideration for such projects. As a result, they have offered their brand new “20:21 Library of Mission and Evangelism Resources on CD-ROM for Windows” to Brigada participants at significantly reduced pricing. To find out more, send email to hub@xc.org with only the following line in the body of the message text:

We’re talkin’ about a savings of hundreds of dollars, folks.

HAVING TROUBLE “GETTING” THE JOSHUA PROJECT 2000 LIST?

At least one Brigada participant (using a different email client than we have here) had trouble with the size of the 2 files containing the Joshua Project 2000 List. As a result, we’ve now broken that list into four parts instead of two. Last week, we wrote that you’d have to include two lines in your request… but now you’ll need four. Just send the following 4 lines to hub@xc.org

get brigada joshua-list-a
get brigada joshua-list-b
get brigada joshua-list-c
get brigada joshua-list-d

By the way, file
“a” contains countries beginning with the letters a-e;
“b” contains those beginning with f-i;
“c” contains j-p; and
“d” contains the remainder of the list.

In this way, if you were primarily interested in one country in particular, you could just instruct the hub to send you the precise segment you need. Remember, the list is presented in comma-delimited ascii and can be opened in any word processor, spreadsheet, or database program for analysis. If you retrieved the list last week, you need not retrieve it again. Even though the list has been repartitioned, no changes have been made in the list itself.

HELP WANTED: FOR RESEARCHING/WRITING AD2000 & BEYOND PEOPLE PROFILES

This past week, we heard from Gabriella Araya, who works with Rick Ward at the Bethany World Center. Bethany is the church that has agreed to coordinate the researching and writing of prayer profiles for the people groups found on the Joshua Project 2000 List. Imagine if it were your job to write up reports on 1685 peoples! Wouldn’t you appreciate some help??? So would Gabriella and the folks at Bethany. More specifically, Bethany is looking for
  1. those who might have pictures of people from these groups. Face shots, in particular, are needed to feature in each of the profiles. and prayer profiles.
  2. They also would appreciate any and all research material available. [gulp ] In particular, if you already have something written on a particular people group on the list, or know of someone who does, contact Bethany. Note that they already have the complete stack of relevant people profiles from the Adopt-a-People Clearinghouse.
  3. Finally, they need researchers/writers.

If you’d be willing to prepare a draft profile on one of the groups and you have access to resources that would allow you to do so, contact Gabriella at 102132.52@compuserve.com or by calling 504-774-2000. We’ll all be glad you did!!!

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT “MISSIONWATCH

This one isn’t by Timex. It’s by Barrett, Long and company! The MissionWatch is a bi-weekly 5-page alert letter listing news and projects which affect the least evangelized peoples of the world (World A)
[Ed. Note: which for the most part contains people of the 10/40 Window].

Justin Long, Editor of the ‘Watch, writes that “The intent of the watch is to share new models, case studies and innovations between various ministries in the hopes that, by learning what others are doing to make themselves more efficient and successful in completing their mission, the reader can improve the efficiency of his own ministry as well.” An annual subscription to the MissionWatch/Go! is $25/year. For a sample issue, write to Justin Long JDavidLong@AOL.COM . Note that Justin also places occasional blips from The MissionWatch on Brigada-peoples. PEOPLE OF THE WEEK

Thanks to Justin Long for this week’s “People of the Week”: “Let’s remember to pray for the Manchu of China: 10.5 million and less than 1% Christian. Most adhere to Chinese folk-religions and spiritist practices. Many are bilingual in Mandarin, but they are treated as conquered subjects by many Han Chinese and so have an aversion to the language. A handful of mission agencies are working among them, and some churches have been planted. Only about a third have heard the Gospel, leaving some seven and a half million untold.”

HOW DO YOU SPELL SECURITY?

Occasionally, we’re asked about the level of security we can provide on Brigada. Originally, with the formation of Brigada-Projects-Security, we were hoping to create air-tight, super-secure conferences for those in sensitive places. But after several months’ discussion among what I believe are some of the most knowledgeable people on the Net when it comes to security issues, we’ve drawn the conclusion that there really isn’t any practical security available right now [emphasis on the word practical]. The bottom line: Brigada users started using PGP on a regular basis, the future would look a lot brighter. But that possibility is not likely to happen anytime soon. At this point, after experimenting with it some this past month, I’ve concluded that for the average user, PGP will be just a tad strange and unexciting, especially in light of the misunderstandings we’ll fear it could cause! :-)

REMEMBER

“GOOD TIMES” IS NO GOOD TIME! — Remember, if you get a message about a supposed virus named, “Good Times”, just ignore it. It’s a hoax, probably designed by INTERNET service handlers to generate tons more traffic so you’ll owe them tons more money for sending all those warnings!!! :-)

WANT TO TEACH??? HEAD FOR K-STAN!

There is an immediate need for several elementary teachers at a school in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The Tien Shan School was been operational since February 1995. It was founded by an independent group of parents for the express purpose of providing low cost quality Christian Education in the English medium, for children of multi-national foreign workers. Teachers will need to raise their own support. For more information email Scott Grandi at Sgrandi@aol.com .

GOT A CHURCH? WANT TO LET OTHERS KNOW?

If the answer is yes and yes, you just might want to let The Center for Great Commission Studies know about it! The Center is a research center in Wake Forest, NC, USA. It is a part of the Churches in Habitat Project of the Peoples Information Network (PIN). As part of this project it is seeking to build a database of every church in the world by at least its city, if not even more exact (security permitting). To accomplish this, it is seeking to obtain directories of churches from denominations, mission boards, councils, etc. If there are individuals or groups who can assist in this by sending these directories or listings (or other helpful information), it would be very appreciated. It can be sent electronically (preferred), by fax, or by post. Please include contact information. Send info. to

GLOBAL GLIMPSE

A Christian worker in the Middle East spent the past year building relationships with leaders of a Muslim minority group. He was invited to speak, but then a local TV station aired a slanderous expose of Christians, showing names and faces, including his own. However, the minority group viewed this as an attack on themselves, and requested him to speak anyway. He spoke to 200 people inside the mosque and several hundred more outside listening by speaker. Roughly 60% of his text was scripture, and afterward an estimated elder added his stamp of approval. Today this worker looks with anticipation at the harvest to come.
