They basically provide an infrastructure that gets you off the hook for having to double-pay your Social Security premiums, so on the whole, they’re probably a great idea. However, the trouble is, some 15 out of 20 treaties so far appear to depend heavily on the family’s willingness to live in the USA at least six months in every 5 years. (The idea behind this criterion appears to hinge on trying to determine some way to measure the family’s loyalty to the USA.
