For U.S. citizens traveling or living internationally, the State Department encourages enrollment in the free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP can send embassy or consulate updates about security developments, demonstrations, severe weather, health concerns, natural disasters, and changes to Travel Advisories. It can also help officials contact you—or your designated emergency contact—during an emergency.  Go to https://travel.state.gov/en/international-travel/travel-advisories/smart-traveler-enrollment-program.html.

For a trip-prep checklist, add:

  • Register the actual destination and travel dates.

  • Verify passport, insurance, and emergency-contact details.

  • Recheck the destination’s official advisory shortly before departure.

  • Save the nearest embassy or consulate’s contact information offline.
