For years, saying goodbye to a departing traveler—or welcoming someone home—has usually happened at the curb or outside the security checkpoint. But that is beginning to change at some U.S. airports.

TSA’s Gateside program now permits certain non-ticketed visitors to enter the terminal and go through security at participating airports. This could be especially helpful for families with children, older travelers, people needing assistance, or international workers arriving after a long journey. It could also allow you to meet a colleague during a layover or enjoy time together before a departure.

There are important limits. Visitors must normally already be enrolled in TSA PreCheck or have a Known Traveler Number, apply for a pass online one to three days before the visit, be approved, and pass through regular TSA screening. Participating airports can cap the number of passes or suspend the program during busy periods.

At the time of reporting, participating airports included Mesa Gateway (AZA), DFW, Detroit (DTW), Indianapolis (IND), Las Vegas (LAS), Los Angeles (LAX), San Diego (SAN), and Salt Lake City (SLC), among others. Before making plans, check both TSA’s Gateside information and the specific airport’s website, since availability and requirements can change.
