A new Barna study reveals a surprising shift: Gen Z churchgoers (ages 18–28) now attend services more frequently than any other generation. On average, they show up about 23 Sundays a year, surpassing Millennials, Gen Xers, and Boomers. While overall church attendance in America is still declining, this trend suggests a spiritual renewal among younger believers.
Barna calls it a “historic generational reversal,” noting that many older adults are attending less often—or not at all. Meanwhile, Gen Z and Millennials are showing fresh interest in faith communities, especially post-pandemic. The study encourages churches to rethink discipleship and engagement strategies, focusing on relational touchpoints and digital outreach to meet younger generations where they are.
